Nitigat Vikas Sansthan
This Indian NGO was established by a small group of volunteers working in remote desert villages then formally registered in 2002. Nitigat promotes the self-sustainability of ethnic and minority groups through education and aid. Their projects include digging wells, building and staffing schools, fair trade promotion for village artisans and the creation of new jobs in remote areas. Yayasan Citra Mandiri
Citra Mandiri, an NGO founded and managed by Mentawai, strives to improve Mentawai life and to give them a voice in the world. Active in projects from land protection, nature conservation and education to protection of Mentawai human rights, they also publish the only periodical with articles in both Mentawai and Indonesian. Native Planet and Citra Mandiri joined forces to increase public awareness and develop cultural ecotourism that returns control to the Mentawai people while improving the quality of services offered to tourists.
